2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Classic Napa Valley with deep, rich color and concentrated black fruit character. Lush, dark berry and cassis flavors complemented by 12 months of French oak barrel aging and a supple tannin structure.

Vintage

A classic Napa Valley growing season and harvest provided an abundance of quality grapes from which winemakers had to choose this year. From spring bud break, through flowering, fruit set, and ripening, conditions were ideal. A consistent stretch of warm summer weather, without large heat spikes and with plenty of cool and foggy nights, ripened grapes to perfection before late rains appeared at the end of October. The 2012 harvest was a gift from mother nature allowing us to pick the fruit at the optimum time, providing us juice that shows the ripe flavors and high quality that Napa has to offer.

Vineyards

To create Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon, Tony Coltrin sourced grapes from throughout Napa’s finest winegrowing regions, including Rutherford, Oakville, Oak Knoll, Wooden Valley, and our own Oso Vineyard at the northeastern end of Napa Valley. By layering fruit from Napa’s volcanic hillside soils and the deeper alluvial soils of the valley floor, Tony accomplished his goal of marrying many different expressions into one outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon that boasts a beautifully rounded mouthfeel and rich, complex flavors.

Winemaking

After the grapes were gently hand-harvested, de-stemmed and crushed, the juice fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with an extended post-fermentation maceration that beautifully married flavors and tannins, giving our Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon its lovely, seamless texture. Malolactic fermentation in barrel, combined with 12 months oak aging (45% new French oak), further concentrated the wine’s vibrant red cherry, candied blackberry, and spice flavors, adding a hint of coffee and a lingering dark chocolate note on the finish.

Reviews

89 Points - 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon
"The nearly outstanding 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley boasts a dense ruby/purple-tinged color as well as a floral-scented nose backed up by aromas of vanillin, black currants, licorice, underbrush, forest floor and cedar. This complex, good Cabernet Sauvignon represents exceptionally good value. Drink it over the next 2-4 years. "

90 Points - 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon
"Another winner is the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon. Composed of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon blended with other Bordeaux varietals, it offers up notes of black currants, vanilla, tobacco leaf, cedar and spice box. Ripe, rich and medium-bodied, with loads of fruit and a heady finish, it can be enjoyed over the next 3-4 years."

91 Points, Editor's Choice - 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon
"This release represents a gigantic leap forward for Oberon in their basic Cabernet Sauvignon. Past releases have been so-so. This one's terrific. Blended from vineyards all over the valley, it shows all the hallmarks of a Napa Cab you want. It's dry, full-bodied and impressively ripe in blackberries, currants, licorice and oak, with a long, smooth finish."
- Wine Enthusiast, February 2012

90 Points - 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon
"This is subtle and delicate with delicate fruit, but a little mature already. Full body, with a nice balance of fruit and toasted oak, medium tannins and a clean finish. Very drinkable now."
